A Child's Winter Fantasy

JAMES L. IANNONE

Frigid gusts and
Mom's shrill order
To bundle up
Will never eclipse the excited glow
Painted on a child's face
As the season's first snow
Carpets the ground
With alabaster flakes.

Children hedge their bets
That school will be canceled
Before they retire to bed--
Homework assignment left incomplete,
They dream the blizzard outside
Will postpone classes for a week.

Minds filled with visions of white-capped peaks
And sleds to race down icy streets.
A stout snowman comes to life
And mediates countless snowball fights.

Faces colored cherub red,
Fingers numb from the day's events.
Hot chocolate thaws frozen heads,
Ice-crusted mittens defrost by heating vents...

Clocks ring
A piercing "Good Morning!"
Children gallop to the window
And wipe away the steam
Only to see
The charcoal street paved clean.
The plow once again proved to be
A child's pesky enemy.
