Candlebox

DAVID HUNTER SUTHERLAND

"What is to give light must endure burning."
-- Viktor Frankl

There are too many isles
within your face.
Tributaries harsh swirls, emblazoned rivers,
estuaries below hanging gardens,
worlds many too many.

In moons and menses,
in tidal yaw,
waves billet our affections ashore
to the littoral whisper of shells:
"love hands you the candlebox",
promises keep,
much of our life
realizes its reflection,
suddenly

there are too many tears
within your eyes,
brine purling through a knot
of melopoetic furls,
oceans' harsh chatter,
submerged meadow on meadow
whisking sand from beach.
Worlds many too many

clamoring, imploring
as the sensual lull
of a maritime sleep,
move deep beneath ria and bight
another world entreaties
to cover your ears
although you are the ocean,
to cover your eyes,
although you are the sea.
